New friendships, new connections, new art
843 to the 855 uses the numbers related to the landline phone area codes for Hamilton South (843) and Fairfield (855), to refer to connection, collaboration and place.
This exhibition showcases the creativity of communities connected with Te Whare Kookonga (Melville), Glenview Community Centre (Glenview), Te Whānau Pūtahi (Fairfield) and Te Whare o Te Ata (Fairfield) who have been working with local artists on creative projects over the past six months.
Whetu Silver (Ngaati Pakahi ki Whangaroa, Ngaati Kahu, Ngaapuhi), Michael Tai Moore (Ngaati Maniapoto, Ngaai Taamanuhiri), Ahsin Ahsin - Ushy (Atiu, Aitutaki - NZ) and Abigail Aroha Jensen (Ngaati Porou) have been on hand to guide the communities through storytelling and creative experimentation through a range of visual and performing arts practices.
843 to the 855 is the result of the new friendships that have developed between artists, neighbourhoods, and organisations.
This adventure has been made possible through the visionary sponsors WEL Energy Trust via Vital Impact grant.
The journey was led by Creative Waikato in partnership with Community Waikato.
The community-led creative work is presented and supported by collaborations between:
- the Community Houses: Te Whare Kookonga, Glenview Community Centre, Te Whare o Te Ata, and Te Whānau Pūtahi
- the Artists: Ahsin Ahsin, Abigail Aroha Jensen, Michael Tai Moore and Whetu-iti Silver
