Better Choices: Healthy Art

Year 9 Artwork from Hamilton Girls’ High School

Classes: Year 9 Art WH, Year 9 Art FH, Year 9 Art AL

This exhibition brings together the work of Hamilton Girls’ High School Year 9 entries for the Better choices/Healthy Art competition 2014.

The three classes approached the competition differently, producing some exciting and thought provoking artworks in both conception and execution.

Students in Mrs Avril’s (AL) class worked collaboratively to produce a painting installation titled A Piece of the Puzzle. The students in Mrs Wallace-Ward’s (WH) class created posters in a group. Ms Fernyhough’s (FH) class based their artworks on the educational benefits of a breakfast club.

The students raised awareness of the issues around child poverty and were moved to action by the words of Mahatma Ghandhi: “Poverty is the worst form of violence”.

The nationwide competition for schools is supported by Child Poverty Action Group, Unicef NZ and Anglican Social Justice.
