Past Exhibition

The striking landscapes of our region have inspired artists since at least the mid-nineteenth century. Victorian painters such as Alfred Sharpe, Charles Bloomfield and Walter Wright produced powerful representations of the mighty Waikato River and its environs.

In the early twentieth century, pastoral themes continued to dominate local fine art and photography, reflecting a largely rural and agricultural society. Industrial, small town and suburban imagery began to feature, however, by the middle of the century.

Country/Town celebrates the diverse environmental focus of regional art. It presents a selection of works, drawn mainly from the Trust Waikato Art and Taonga Collection.
