An Arduous Journey

Te Puea Herangi, a granddaughter of King Taawhiao, knew only too well the outcome of the epidemic on her people.  Nearly a quarter of her community at Mangatawhiri had succumbed to the influenza, leaving her in charge of the survivors, many without family or parents.

It was this new, extended family that accompanied her from Mangatawhiri (Mercer) to the untamed land  at Ngaruawahia. And it was in this new, challenging environment that she created Te Pou o Mangatawhiri, a concert party whose sole purpose was to raise money to realise a dream – Tuurangawaewae Marae.
