Don't miss this kaupapa Maaori workshop

Facilitated by our pouako Cassandra Barnett (Raukawa/Ngaati Huri)

Inspired by the first printed Maaori newspaper – a taonga that Te Whare Taonga o Waikato Museum & Gallery proudly holds a copy of in its collection – we offer this kaupapa Maaori zine workshop in collaboration with ZineFest Kirikiriroa.

Te Hokioi e Rere Atu Na (The Soaring War Bird) was first printed in 1862 near Ngaaruawaahia, as British troops were entering the Waikato. Ever since, Maaori have been utilising print to send our voices of protest and solidarity to the world.

Let’s reclaim publishing for our communities, rally our cries, and let them fly.

What is a zine?!

A zine is a small handcrafted booklet, made from original or re-purposed writing and images. They are cheap, easy to make, instantly shareable, totally original: the perfect vehicle for lo-fi mass publishing.

What should I bring?

We’ll provide paper, pens, glue, collage tools, and a photocopier.

Bring your slogans, your waiata, your poetry, your art, your insights, your blackout texts - anything you may want to repurpose and use to create your zine.

Who can come?

This workshop is for creative adults who are interested in engaging with the kaupapa and learning more about the history of mana motuhake in publishing, as represented by the Museum's taonga.
