Ngaati Hauaa taonga from local and national collections are brought together for the first time.

The exhibition title, Whakahokia!, was gifted by the advisory roopuu of Mike Ross, Mokoro Gillett, Robyn Roa, Sonny Karena and Barbara Moke.

Celebrating whakapapa

This exhibition is an invitation to learn, reflect and celebrate. It honours the voices of those who carried these stories forward and acknowledges those who hold them now. Above all, Whakahokia! recognises that the taonga of Ngaati Hauaa continue to live through the people and places to which they belong.

Each piece carries a story

These taonga highlight moments of transition and adaptation, celebrate leaders and innovators, and share stories of endurance in the face of profound change. Each piece carries a story of whakapapa, knowledge, and lived experience that continues to shape Ngaati Hauaa today.

Contemporary strength

Alongside historical taonga, Whakahokia! acknowledges the ongoing cultural, political and creative contributions of Ngaati Hauaa

Tribal-led storytelling and historical perspectives help visitors see the kaupapa that has sustained the people of Ngaati Hauaa for generations.
