New Zealand’s fossil record is unlike anywhere else on Earth...

The creatures preserved in our rocks tell stories of ancient seas, volcanic upheaval, and species found nowhere else in the world, and they’re still being uncovered.

As part of Fossil Fest, we’ll bring together scientists, geologists, and fossil hunters for a public talk and lively panel discussion exploring what makes the fossils of Aotearoa New Zealand so distinct.

4pm: Doors open
4.30pm: Presentation from Dr Bruce Hayward
5.30pm: Interval (nibbles will be provided, non-alcoholic drinks available to purchase)

Meet the speakers

Dr Bruce Hayward

Speaker & Panelist

Dr Bruce Hayward is one of New Zealand’s most respected geologists and palaeontologists, with hundreds or research papers and 25 books to his name. A Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand and Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, Bruce brings a lifetime of expertise and stories of discovery.

Oliver McLeod

Panelist

Oliver McLeod is a Waikato-trained geologist with a passion for making earth science accessible. He has published two books on Waikato volcanoes and regularly presents public talks on the history of our region.

Kerr Sharpe Young

Panelist

Kerr Sharpe-Young is the Taranaki-based fossil hunter behind the viral “What’s In That Rock” series. His discoveries have contributed to published scientific research, including a fossilised penguin skull – the only one of its kind ever found.

Caleb Maher

Fossil Enthusiast & MC

Caleb Maher is our in-house fossil enthusiast and one of those involved with the Fossil Finds exhibition from the very beginning. With a background spanning earth science, ecology, molecular biology, and behavioural psychology, Caleb is an amateur fossil hunter himself. He has explored fossil sites across the North Island and as far afield as Drumheller in Alberta, Canada (one of the world’s most significant dinosaur fossil sites). He leads the Museum’s weekly fossil tours and will be our MC for the evening.

Good to know

The museum closes to the public at 5pm. Please arrive before this time, as latecomers will not be admitted after doors close.
