New Zealand’s beaches may be hiding millions of years of history. Kerr Sharpe-Young (@get.your.rocks.off) know exactly where to look, what to look for, and how to crack open the past.

Kerr has built a following of nearly 180,000 people on social media doing exactly that. His "What's In That Rock?" series documents the thrill of cracking open rocks from the Taranaki coastline to reveal the ancient creatures preserved inside.

Over the years, he has found everything from shells and crabs to birds and the even the occasional dinosaur. His discoveries have even contributed to published scientific research, including a fossilised penguin skull from three million years ago: the only one of its kind ever found.

Watch Kerr work through a selection of rocks in real time, cracking them open to reveal whatever lies within. No two rocks are the same. There may be a fossil inside, or there may not. No matter the outcome, this live demonstration is a great opportunity to learn about the fossils that have been hiding in plain sight on our coastlines for millions of years.
